What Is Grassroot Soccer? Grassroot Soccer is a non-profit organization based in the Upper Valley that provides HIV/AIDS prevention services in Africa. Grassroot Soccer has developed an interactive skills-based curriculum that combines team activities, soccer drills and games, and participation by local and U.S.-based soccer stars to provide early adolescent youth with skills and information to stay HIV free. A recent evaluation by the Children’s Health Council, an affiliate of Stanford University, determined that the education programs offered by Grassroot Soccer significantly improves student knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of social support related to HIV/AIDS and is both effective and culturally appropriate.
Currently, GRS works in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa and has graduated over 50,000 youth from its programs in the past five years. GRS relies heavily on its Field Intern program to deliver the curriculum in Africa; field interns are recent U.S. college graduates and soccer players who make a volunteer commitment to GRS and are placed in various geographical areas in the Sub-Saharan for 6 – 9 months to teach and supervise the educational programs. GRS is poised for significant expansion as corporate sponsors and other major funders prepare for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
