Strength Speed and Agility Training

NEW Strength, Speed and Agility Sessions

Spring 2010

We are happy to announce that new this spring, Lightning Soccer Club will be adding  Strength, Speed and Agility Sessions for all U12 - U18 teams. Charles Mhlauri and Jay Hydren have worked together to design our spring clinic offering specially for our Lightning athletes. Jay is a certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, as well as a returning Lightning Soccer coach and professional soccer referee.

Program
The sessions will include soccer-specific training drills to increase agility, power, explosiveness and speed, as well as exercises aimed at injury prevention, and basic instruction on proper running and cutting techniques - all geared to the age and physical development of each athlete. The first half of each session will consist of drills that focus on developing quick feet, speed and agility technique, and the second half will focus on soccer-specific conditioning of energy systems and muscles. These sessions will be held at no additional charge.

Schedule
Jay will be leading the training sessions at Huntley Meadow in Norwich. Each team will have one sixty-minute session per week:

Baseline Assessment
During the first week, Jay will conduct an assessment for each player from which he/she can measure progress.  This assessment will also help the club measure the overall effectiveness of the program.  The testing will evaluate explosive power, speed, agility, flexibility, aerobic fitness, and local muscle endurance. Testing will take the entire hour of the first session and it is important for players to make every effort to attend this first session during the week of April 12th. One make-up date will be scheduled (tbd) to ensure every player has an established baseline. Note, this testing is for the benefit of the individual player and will not affect playing time, a position on a team, or team placement. In addition, LSC is hoping to instill in its athletes that setting short and long-term goals, and working hard to meet those goals can yield measurable results, a skill that will hopefully serve players well beyond Lightning Soccer!

Must players attend?
Some players live far away and/or may have scheduling conflicts with other sports or other commitments. Lighting SC encourages the development of well-rounded athletes and students. Please encourage your players to make their team's time slot if possible. If a player cannot make the training days, please have him/her contact Jay. Jay will work with the player to find a better time, or help oversee an individualized approach. The workouts will be posted online via our web site, consisting of a short write-up of the workout and video explaining and demonstrating each exercise/drill.

Equipment
Players should wear weather-appropriate workout clothes (i.e. shorts, shirt, athletic pants and top if needed, change of clothes in case of rain). Cleats can be used, or any cross training shoes with good lateral support. Running shoes without lateral support are not recommended.
