Age Group Information
Beginning this year, US Soccer is transitioning age group formation to a grade-based structure rather than birth-year registration.
This change is not a strict mandate, and we retain flexibility in how we apply it within our club. We are fortunate that Lightning SC’s size allows us to be intentional and thoughtful in making decisions that best serve our players and their families, ensuring each player is placed in an environment where they are appropriately challenged and supported in their development.
Specific grade breakdowns and team placements will be communicated clearly during the tryout process. In the meantime, you can review the table below and use the age group calculator to better understand where your player may fall.
| Age Group | Birth Date Range |
|---|---|
| U15 | Aug 1, 2011 – Jul 31, 2012 |
| U14 | Aug 1, 2012 – Jul 31, 2013 |
| U13 | Aug 1, 2013 – Jul 31, 2014 |
| U12 | Aug 1, 2014 – Jul 31, 2015 |
| U11 | Aug 1, 2015 – Jul 31, 2016 |
| U10 | Aug 1, 2016 – Jul 31, 2017 |
| U9 | Aug 1, 2017 – Jul 31, 2018 |
What to Expect at Tryouts
Our tryouts are designed to evaluate players in a structured and positive environment.
Players will participate in:

Small-sided games
Possession-based activities
Competitive match play
Our coaching staff evaluates players on:
Technical ability
Tactical understanding
Decision-making
Work rate and attitude
Coachability
Competitive mindset
We aim to identify players not just for their current level, but for their long-term developmental potential within Lightning SC.
How to Prepare for Tryouts
To give yourself the best opportunity:
Arrive 30 minutes early
Wear black training gear (no club-specific uniforms required)
Get proper rest the night before
Hydrate throughout the day
Come ready to compete, communicate, and support others
Most importantly, be confident and play your game. We want players to express themselves and show their personality on the field.
